SO1005_Video Competition 2013_thebrief_03d

Christmas is a time for spending a whole lot of ‘quality’ time on the sofa with the family watching classic old movies and cartoons. But have you ever thought about making a little movie? The Christmas sofa time could be put to great use thinking about your own short film for kids. have launched a competition for up and coming film and animation makers to create their own short movie. Based around the theme Happiness your movie can be about anything; as long as its light-hearted and aimed at kids! It doesn’t even have to have a sofa in it! For the people at its all about having fun and encouraging creative talent.

Both the prizes and the judges are pretty special! Included on the judging panel is Merlin Crossingham, Creative Director of Wallace & Gromit at Aardman Animations. Over the festive period you’re bound to see at least one Aardman film – but don’t worry you don’t have to be a stop-motion animation genius to enter. But its pretty cool that your film could be watched by one.

The top prize is £3000 (in money not sofas!) and your film being shown in showrooms in London & New York. And if they really like your entry they might ask you to create a digital advert.

There are also 3 runner up prizes of £1000 and a people’s choice prize of £1000

So put your time on the sofa over Christmas to good use and make your own kids movie! Final deadline for entries is 31st March – loads of time!

To download the brief pop over to – this is an international competition so please share across the world!

Just to give you a little inspiration and to give you an understanding of the mindset at here’s a film they made. Its the Sofa World Speed Record!

Hidden: Berlin Store – Andreas Murkudis

Andreas_Murkudis_Fashion_Interiors_Store_BerlinIn contrast to the antiquated charm of Kühn Keramik in my last Hidden Berlin the store of Andreas Murkudis has the feel of a vast contemporary gallery. You enter the warehouse space via a loading bay. I’m not sure exactly what the building used to be but it must have been something pretty industrious to have a loading bay!

Andreas_Murkudis_Celine_Bags_Store_BerlinWith a range of carefully curated pieces from across home, fashion accessories and even something for the kids displayed on the central plinth the rest of the space is devoted to contemporary fashion for men and women. You can get your fix of international brands; Celine bags dangling from the iron rails or your beauty fix of Aesop. But there is a strong focus on contemporary German design across all areas from Berlin brand Mykita sunglasses to some beautiful pieces by Nymphenburg.  I massively regret not coming home with a gorgeous black glass Lobmeyr Alpha Decanter…. but theres always online….

Its such a luxury for any store to have such a huge space – but thats what you can get when you’re slightly off the beaten track.  Its also such a bonus that its an independent store with its own identity thats reflects the individuality of Berlin. Its well worth hunting down.

New Designers Part 1 2013

The annual exhibition of UK design graduates New Designers opened last week, showcasing the lastest crop talent to come out of UK universities and art colleges. Heres a pick of some of the talent I spotted at the show. Graduating is a tough time for any student but I’m pretty confident great things lie ahead for many of the designers featured here. In my Habitat post it was great to see one of the New Designers exhibitors of 2008 having such a pivotal role in the Habitat design team.
